When I first arrived in Mississippi for college, I was immediately captivated by the grand houses along the sorority and fraternity rows on our campus. Not only was I struck by the beauty of their architecture, but I was charmed by the many with wide and expansive columned porches often dotted with white rocking chairs. Coming from the Midwest nothing could have seemed more quintessentially Southern to me, and I absolutely fell in love.
We have seen porches with curtains and those with screens so far in our look at these staples of summer living. Today, we'll finish with a look at spaces that perfectly characterize a traditional front porch-- those furnished with rocking chairs and swings.

While technically the following room should have been with the other screened porches, the rocking chairs reminded me so much of those from the houses on my college campus, I had to include them here.

Ooh those are really really beautiful~ I am bookmarking these for inspiration. You see I wanted a swing but not a traditional Indian swing! Until I saw these pics, it was difficult explaining to ppl around me what exactly I wanted - these are exactly what I want:) Thank you!!

I have always had a soft spot for a gorgeous porch! Just a perfect place to be!

Why is it that a porch seems so glamorous and romantic? Lovely shots, xv.
ReplyDeleteThose rockers and Southern porches go hand in hand - I can't tell you how many I sat on nor how many hours I rocked away with my Nonnie - saying nothing, but saying it all. "Come and rock a spell, child... have some sweet tea." Ahhhhh memories.

All of these porches are just 100%
ReplyDeletePure Magic!
I,too, remember the sorority house porches at LSU --- - all overlooking the lake across the street. I always wondered if any of the girls appreciated how special those houses were .
Courtney - these porch posts are all wonderful!!!
I absolutely agree and feel everything your are saying! When I went to college I immediately fell in love with the Row houses as well. And I love a great front porch - possibly because I love to people watch as well, ha!
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite moments are the ones I spend with my dad on his front porch. We are both early risers, and we each have our cup of tea or coffee, sit on his big Southern front porch and rock the morning away.
ReplyDeleteLove this post!
nothing cozier than i great porch... love these and your blog... hope you had a nice weekend.. pam
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. I enjoyed your blog..
ReplyDeleteI've always dreamed of having a wrap around front porch with rockers for the hubs and I. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI dream about a front porch with a swing, coffee and the Sunday paper.
ReplyDeleteWe're not moving for a long while, but our next house will have one.
I couldn't agree more, we all need a good porch!
ReplyDeletethe weather here today is exactly the kind of weather that would make having one of these so worth it! i feel the most perfect breeze coming through the windows, and i can picture sitting on a porch like this with some cool iced tea and feeling it sweep across my face. how wonderful. this post has transported me to such a place. now if i could only get a real one. i only have a little back porch {very tiny} and a side stoop. some day . . .
ReplyDeletei compromised my need, ok, want (but a desperate want) for a front porch when we bought our current house. i'm drawn to front porches like #2. white paint, black shutters, and green green ferns. i think it's just stunning. looks like those black rocking chairs are on the same porch. perfect!
ReplyDeleteI love how you pick a topic and explore it in multiple posts. :)
ReplyDeleteAll of the porches you have featured have been absolutely gorgeous! I wish I had a porch...and cooler weather so that I could actually enjoy it!
Amen Courtney. All houses should have porches with rocking chairs, swings, a chaise & a pitcher of lemonade.
ReplyDeleteIts such a retreat only feet away from your reality but it can be miles to your soul.
Peace & ice cream.
One of the reasons I love to stop by your blog, is because I'm attracted.... your pictures are mesmerising....can't help putting my feet up, enjoy the view, the surroundings and fantasize I'm living in one of them. Is simply fascination!
ReplyDeleteDonna, thanks for your very sweet words! I'm glad that you enjoy the "view" here; I like to fantasize I'm living in many of the photos too! :)
